Elizabeth Warren was on the Late Show last night.
Imagine…
I thought Bernie Sanders did very well on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert last night.
"We are the richest country on earth", Sanders said. "We are the only wealthy country on earth that doesn't offer paid medical sick leave and people are asking 'why?'.
Colbert would go on to play "Capitalist Advocate" insisting that we became the wealthiest nation because of capitalism and that if we get rid of it we will become less wealthy. Sanders batted down the question by pointing out that he has no problem with entrepreneurship and innovation but was simply asking for greater fairness. The audience seem to eat it up as the Senator was interrupted by several applause breaks.
"But you don't take Super PAC money", Colbert pointed out. "If you want to be in it to win it, you got to use every tool in the chest... don't bring a spoon to a knife fight."
"I don't have a Super PAC because frankly I don't support the agenda of the billionaire class", Sanders said. "I don't want their money".
Colbert, who taught Catholic Catechism for several years, says he thinks there is a responsibility with devotion. When Rosica asked him about religious fanaticism and the Charlie Hebdo murders, Colbert said that the Catholic Church was once that extreme. He also said he’s relieved he wasn’t doing a show when the Hebdo massacre took place. “There’s no sufficient response I could’ve thought of at that moment, and I felt very lucky not to be on-air at that time,“ said Colbert. “When a big story happens, I would think, ‘I wish I were on-air to talk about this,’ that one was like, ‘I’m so glad I’m not because I don’t have anything I think that approaches it.’”
But he said his second reaction to the murders was to look at his own faith. “If this were the 14th Century, Christians could have done this,” he said. “If the 15th Century Christians might have been offended to the point of violence, at blaspheme. You know, check your history books. So, in an ultimate sense, I do not perceive that action, is indicative of Islam… I’m not trying to make a moral equivalency between the Christianity of the Middle Ages and these people, who are doing this horror right now, but every religion has been so defensive of its beliefs that it has actually abandoned its beliefs at times.”
This seems slightly oxymoronic to me.
From Greeting Card Company Order of St. Nick Finds Niche With "Atheist Christmas Cards":
Do atheists celebrate Christmas? Famous atheists such as Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris do, and humorous greeting card publisher Order of St. Nick is betting that millions more do as well. The company has just expanded its selection of "atheist Christmas cards," available for sale online at www.AtheistHolidayCards.com.Read the rest here.
The cards feature a mix of standard atheist iconography such as Charles Darwin and evolutionary monkeys, along with tongue-in-cheek sayings such as "Evolve Your Beliefs." Another card, featuring a red-nosed reindeer, reads, "The red nose isn't weird... It's an evolutionary advantage."
"Nearly 15% of Americans identify themselves as 'non-religious,' but surveys have consistently shown that 95% of Americans celebrate Christmas," says Andrew Shaffer, Order of St. Nick's owner and creative director. "That's nearly 30 million atheists, agnostics, secularists, skeptics, and humanists who are being overlooked by mainstream card companies at this time of the year.
“It’s almost as if their prayers went unanswered.”
From The Iraq Follies By Greg Mitchell:
Stephen Colbert's routine at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner in April 2006 is remembered for the in-his-face mockery of President Bush—but he also spanked the press, perhaps one reason his mainstream reviews were mixed at best. Addressing the correspondents directly, Colbert said, "Let's review the rules. The president makes decisions; he's the decider. The press secretary announces those decisions, and you people of the press type those decisions down. Make, announce, type. Put them through a spell-check and go home. Get to know your family again. Make love to your wife. Write that novel you got kicking around in your head. You know, the one about the intrepid Washington reporter with the courage to stand up to the administration. You know—fiction."
On Meet the Press in July 2007, David Brooks declared that 10,000 Iraqis a month would perish if the United States pulled out. Bob Woodward, also on the show, challenged him on this, asking for his source. Brooks admitted, "I just picked that 10,000 out of the air."
