Serial Anti-Catholic Bigots?

Bill Donohue offends yet again. Bill Donohue is a serial anti-atheist bigot. He offends me.

BILL MAHER OFFENDS YET AGAIN:

Bill Donohue comments on Bill Maher’s latest assault on decency:

When serial anti-Catholic bigots Bill Maher and Seth MacFarlane get together, it is a sure fire recipe for new lows in tastelessness. And that’s what we got on HBO last Friday night, as MacFarlane appeared on “Real Time with Bill Maher.”

“…you’re so lucky that you do cartoons,” Maher told the creator of Fox’s “Family Guy,” “because the things you get away with in cartoons—I’m so jealous of …”

Notice that Bill Maher offends with capital letters. He must be a MAJOR OFFENDER.

Using the phrase "serial anti-Catholic bigots" seems odd to me. It's kind of like bigotry in installments, sort of like bigotry that is turned off for awhile, until the next installment of bigotry comes along.

I think that Catholics have no right to judge others on decency. Can you say PRIESTS WHO RAPE CHILDREN!

It doesn't take much for Bill Donohue to be offended, but whenever he is, I feel a little bit more happy. Kudos to Bill Maher and Seth MacFarlane. And, I don't even like "Family Guy."

You're Stupid! No, You're Stupid!

Norm Macdonald Slams 'Unfunny' Bill Maher, 'Hack' Atheists:

Comedian Norm Macdonald uttered some unpopular opinions for liberal Hollywood, slamming "hack" atheists and mocking Bill Maher as "unfunny." The Saturday Night Live alum talked to The Hollywood Reporter and derided Los Angeles elitists: "Oh, just the smugness. There are a lot more hack 'smart' comedians nowadays and atheist comedians. It's so dull."

In the September 1 article, he added, "To be talking about being an atheist living in West Hollywood is not the bravest stance to take. If a guy went up and said, 'Jesus Christ is our lord and savior,' I’d say, 'Damn, that guy’s brave!'"

I think that many people think that Norm Macdonald is an unfunny, dull, smug, hack comedian.

Let's all just call each other names and then pretend that we've actually accomplished something.

Religulousosity

Bill Maher gets religulous.

Maher, who has been picking on organized religion for years on his TV shows "Politically Incorrect" and "Real Time," zealously traveled the world for "Religulous," his documentary challenging the validity and value of Christian, Jewish and Islamic faiths.

Raised in a Roman Catholic household by a Catholic father and Jewish mother, Maher decided at an early age that the trappings and mythology of the world's religions were preposterous, outdated and even dangerous.

"Religulous," directed by fellow doubter Larry Charles ("Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan"), is intended to inspire similar skepticism in others -- and perhaps get nonbelievers to talk more openly about their lack of faith.

Surprise, surprise. Some Catholics don’t like it that Bill Maher got religulous.

It seems that every time I turn on the television, I hear the comedian Bill Maher bad-mouthing religion. In the last several years, Maher has appeared dozens of times on Larry King’s show, where he consistently mocks the beliefs of religious people, especially Christians. Well, he’s come out with a new documentary film on his favorite subject, and he’s called it, subtly enough, Religulous. I had the opportunity to see an advance screeing of the movie last week in a theatre on the near north side of Chicago. Please don’t go to see it — and I say this for two reasons. First, it’s a mindless and utterly unpersuasive attack on religious faith, and second, it’s remarkably unfunny. Religulous is basically a one-joke movie: put Bill Maher in the presence of simple-minded folks and let the clever comedian take apart their beliefs. This might have worked as a five-minute sketch, but twenty minutes into the movie, I was gazing at my watch in boredom. Practically all of Maher’s interlocutors — Christian fundamentalists, anti-evolutionists, a holocaust-denying rabbi, or even a man who thought he was the re-incarnation of Jesus — had in common a complete intellectual incapacity to deal with the standard objections that the comedian raised. Again and again, I found myself muttering, “Come on, Maher, pick on someone your own size.”

Thieving Welfare Queens

Bill Maher asks us to not judge people “by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

…a candidate for President should not be judged by the color of his skin. And to…and to anyone who thinks differently, I say please do not reject John McCain just because he’s white. I think the recent news from Wall Street has made us all less tolerant and only reinforce the stereotype that white people are shiftless, thieving welfare queens.

Now, take a look at these pictures. Here are the CEOs of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, AIG and the Lehman Brothers. I know the first thing that jumps out about these faces is that they all happen to be white, and they all happen to be responsible for stealing. But what you have to understand is that these whites are a product of a society that made them that way. It was the neighborhoods and the schools they went to: Harvard, Yale, the Wharton School of Business. They never learned the value of doing real, actual work and the first step to fixing that is better role models, so kids growing up white today don’t think the only way out of Westchester is corporate crime. Or a government handout or sailing. So I get it, the temptation is to look at McCain and vote against him because you don’t see an individual, you just see another typical welfare whitey.

And it’s true, he’s spent his entire life shuffling from one low-paying government job to another. Well, except those years he spent in prison. Typical! And between you and me, he’s not very articulate. Oh, he may have some street smarts, but he’s not what you call an educated man. He freely admits he’s ignorant about the economy. And apparently the only thing his white running mate knows how to do is crank out one baby after another. And now of course, her teenage daughter is pregnant out of wedlock. Because she learns it at home! But that doesn’t mean we should assume all white people are like that, just because so many of them are. I believe there is hope. I believe even the stoopiest…stupidest, greediest, laziest whites can break the cycle of dependence like this November when we finally move George Bush out of public housing.

Bill Maher is a brave man. Not only does he flaunt his political incorrectness regularly as the host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, but now he’s taking on fundamentalist wackos in Religulous, a documentary coming out this fall.
