P.J. O’Rourke On Adam Smith On The Daily Show

P.J. O’Rourke on Adam Smith:

He dug the basement for the house in which we are being foreclosed on.
And he also lets slip this little gem of a description of himself, which I think applies to all pundits:
…but I don’t actually know anything about this, I don’t know anything about this free market that I keep saying is so wonderful…
Like Mr. O’Rourke, I have wondered from time to time about the relationship between the economy and the “war” in Iraq:

Like Mr. O’Rourke says, wars are usually good for the economy. We are supposed to be at war, so why is the economy so bad. Here is what I can come up with as to why this is so:
  1. George W. Bush is King of the Anti-Midis Touch. Instead of turning to gold, everything he touches turns to crap.
  2. George W. Bush is King of Bush-League Economics. He actually believes his "war" (see #4) is helping the economy and that all our economic problems are because: "we built too many houses."
  3. George W. Bush is a Republican, and Republicans are stupid enough to believe in Voodoo Economics.
  4. We are not really at war with anyone. We occupy Iraq and Afghanistan. We are at war with drugs and terrorists, both of which are abstractions, not countries.
